About this work

This painting shows a woman in traditional Japanese clothing, sitting in a chair. She has black hair and wears a dark robe with a blue and gold sash. The background is red, with a white rectangle at the top containing Japanese writing and a drawing of a person in a green robe. To the right of the woman is a purple fabric with a white pattern, and a small potted plant with pink flowers. There is also a vertical strip of Japanese writing on the right side of the painting. The painting is a woodblock print, ink, and color on paper, created by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1880. You can learn more about the artist's use of cross-hatching technique.
