Folio 73 from a Gandavyuha-sutra (Scripture of the Supreme Array): Sudhana and an antelope (recto); text (verso) is a 1104 unspecified by Unknown, a Byzantine icon painting work, depicting Nepal, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This is a long, narrow strip of wood with writing carved into it. On the top piece, there’s a small painted scene: a red deer with a white face and antlers stands next to a figure in a blue robe. The rest of the wood is packed with tiny, neat letters arranged in rows. The colors are faded but still hold a warm brown and a soft red. The deer and figure look like they’re part of a story, maybe from a religious text. The writing around them is dense, like pages from an old book. If you like this, look up nepal to see where similar art comes from.
