Shiva and Sati is a 1885 paint by Unknown, a Impressionism work, depicting Kalighat, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows two figures standing close together. The person on the left wears a yellow headpiece, a striped skirt, and holds a trident. The other figure has a red cloth draped over one shoulder, a necklace, and a headdress with a peacock feather. Above them floats a golden wheel with red spokes. The bright colors and bold outlines suggest this is a *kalighat* painting, a style from colonial-era India. Look up kalighat to see more paintings like this.
The painting depicts Shiva carrying the corpse of Sati, pursued by Vishnu's discus, rendered in opaque watercolour on paper. Created in 1885 by an unknown artist, the work reflects a scene from Hindu mythology. It was acquired in 1894 from Miss M Steele, part of a collection inherited from her mother, a Sanskrit scholar at Cambridge, possibly originally gathered during her grandmother's time in India.
