About this work

This sketch shows a quiet riverside scene with a tall palm tree in the foreground. Two small boats float on the water, and a few people stand near the shore. In the distance, a line of trees and a cluster of buildings sit along the horizon. The artist used loose, sketchy lines to suggest light and shadow, focusing on the natural shapes of the trees and water. The palm tree stands out as the biggest thing in the picture. The story of this work

Overview

A landscape drawing from 1830 features palm trees and is part of a series of 65 detached, mounted pencil illustrations titled *Pictorial Journal of Travels in Hindustan from 1828 to 1833* by Captain Robert Smith of the 44th Regiment. The journal documents voyages along the Ganges from Calcutta to Cawnpore in 1828–29 and visits to cities including Delhi, Agra, and Lucknow in 1831–32. Smith later retired to Ireland in 1833 and continued refining the unpublished manuscript until 1845. The drawing was donated by W. M. Biden of Hampton-on-Thames and entered the museum’s collection in 1915.
