You see a small, smudged drawing of a woman’s face in profile. Her hair is pulled back, and her features are soft, almost blurred. No one knows who made it or what it was for. It was tucked inside a big book of sketches at the Rijksmuseum, like a loose thought someone forgot to sign. The lines look quick, as if the artist was practicing or just passing time.
