About this work
Subject & Meaning
The composition highlights Fernández de Córdoba on horseback, visually dominating the scene.
The Victory of Fleurus depicts the Battle of Fleurus fought on August 29, 1622, where the Catholic League army, commanded by Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, defeated Protestant forces led by Prince Christian of Brunswick and Count Ernest of Mansfeld. As part of the Battle Series for the Hall of Realms, the work functions as an allegorical glorification of King Philip IV's military triumphs and princely virtues. Unlike other canvases in the cycle that focus on distant battlefields, this painting incorporates graphic combat in the foreground, featuring two soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand fighting and a nearly nude, classically styled corpse.
The composition highlights Fernández de Córdoba on horseback, visually dominating the scene. Although the general received the title of Prince of Maratea for this victory in 1624, the painting was executed in 1634, a time when the commander's reputation had already suffered due to later military failures.
Technique & Style
The Victory of Fleurus is painted in oil on canvas, measuring 297 × 365 cm. Carducci employed a Baroque idiom, arranging the composition in layered spatial planes: a foreground of hand-to-hand combat with a near-nude corpse in a classical mode, a mid-ground of grouped pikemen and flanking musketeers in disciplined tercio formation, and a distant, minutely detailed battlefield. The palette is earthy yet luminous, with steel armor and weaponry rendered in reflective highlights against subdued terrain. The artist’s handling combines precise delineation of figures with atmospheric recession, using chiaroscuro to model forms and guide the viewer’s eye through the narrative stages of victory.
The signed cartouche at the lower center reads: Victoria iuxta Floru, anno MCDXXII, a Gundizalvo de Córdova obtetann, Vincentius Carduchi Regiae Majestatis pictor, anno duodecimo a bello currente pingebat, anchoring both date and authorship.
History & Provenance
Painted in oil on canvas by Vincenzo Carducci in 1634, The Victory of Fleurus was commissioned as part of a series of twelve battle paintings intended to decorate the Salón de Reinos within the Palacio del Buen Retiro in Madrid. This cycle served to glorify the military successes of King Felipe IV. The work depicts the 1622 Battle of Fleurus and bears an inscription on a cartela at the bottom center noting the year of the battle and the ten-year anniversary of the conflict during its creation.
Originally cataloged as number 251 in the 1701 inventory of the Salón de Reinos, the painting remained in the Royal Collection, moving to the Palacio Real by 1814 after being removed from the tribune corridors. It is currently housed in the Museo del Prado, where it holds the inventory number P000635.

Its inclusion in the Prado’s holdings and its frequent citation in art‑historical studies, such as the works of Álvarez Lopera, Angulo Íñiguez, Pérez Sánchez, Brown and Elliott, demonstrate the painting’s enduring reputation as a Baroque exemplar of Vicente Carducho’s contribution to the visual glorification of Philip IV’s reign.
