Reading by Lamplight is a 1859 ink by James McNeill Whistler, a Impressionism work, depicting Reading, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a quiet room at night. A woman sits by a lamp, reading with her head bowed low. The light washes over her face, leaving the rest of the scene in soft, fuzzy shadow. Whistler made this when he was still learning his craft. He used a needle to scratch lines into a metal plate. Then he inked it and pressed paper on top, printing it by hand. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom.
