This lithograph shows a seated figure wrapped in draped fabric, drawn in simple black lines. The artist cut out most details. Only the figure’s outline and folds of cloth remain. Whistler liked this style. He worked in color often, but here he let the black ink do all the talking. It feels quiet and strong at once. This kind of drawing is called lithography. Look it up.
