The Wharf is a 1869 by Willem Roelofs, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a busy dock at dusk. Two workers stand near boats—one leans on a wooden post, the other sits in a small boat with a pile of ropes. The background has ships tied up, and the light is fading fast, leaving dark shapes behind. The artist used quick, rough lines to show movement and shadow, almost like scribbles. The dark areas blend into the light, making the scene feel alive but a little blurry. Check out chiaroscuro for how artists use light and shadow like this.
Willem Roelofs (10 March 1822 – 12 May 1897) was a Dutch painter, water-colourist, etcher, lithographer and draughtsman.
