The Bacchante and the Young Faun is a 1911 by William Walcot, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows two figures in a dim, shadowy forest. The person on the left stands half-hidden behind thick, tangled trees, their face blurred. The figure on the right is more detailed—a woman with flowing hair and a draped cloth, holding what looks like a dark, heavy object. The background is messy with loose, hurried lines, like the artist was working fast. The woman’s pose and the wild setting suggest a scene from mythology, but the drawing feels rough and unfinished. The artist didn’t smooth out the lines, leaving some areas smudged or scratched. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this.
