The story of this work

Overview

This albumen print depicts Sarah Lane and is an example of a 19th-century theatrical carte de visite, a small visiting-card-sized photograph popular in the 1860s. Produced from a glass negative, the image was mounted on stiff card bearing the photographer’s name, part of a widespread Victorian practice of collecting actor portraits alongside scenic views and art reproductions. The photograph originates from a large collection of cartes de visite and cabinet cards assembled by Guy Tristram Little, who removed them from their original backings and mounted them in albums before bequeathing the…
