The Bamboccianti were a circle of 17th-century genre painters active in Rome, known for depicting scenes of everyday life among the lower classes. The group formed around the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer, whose nickname 'Il Bamboccio' gave the circle its name, and influenced the development of realistic genre painting in Italy.
