Jin Chushi was a Chinese Buddhist painter active at the port city of Ningbo (Mingzhou) during the Southern Song dynasty in the thirteenth century. He worked in the professional workshops that supplied devotional paintings for temples and funerary rites. He is known above all for sets of hanging scrolls depicting the Ten Kings of Hell, the judges who weigh the deeds of the dead in Chinese Buddhist belief.
These scrolls, produced in series and often exported to Japan, combine vivid narrative scenes of judgment and punishment with detailed figures and architecture. Examples survive in museum collections in Japan and the West.
