La Galerie du Paris is a 1640 by Abraham Bosse, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a busy room with a group of people dressed in fancy 17th-century clothes. Some are standing, some are talking, and two dogs are on the floor. Behind them, shelves hold small paintings, books, and odd-shaped objects like a diamond. The walls have ornate carvings and text in French. Notice the way the artist used light and shadow to make the scene feel three-dimensional, even though it’s a print. The faces and fabrics have subtle shading that pops them forward. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how this technique works.
Abraham Bosse (c. 1604 – 14 February 1676) was a French artist, mainly as a printmaker in etching, but also in watercolour.
