About this work

This print shows a crowded scene with two main groups. On the left, three men—one kneeling—stand under a makeshift roof, while a crowd gathers around them. On the right, a family huddles in a stone doorway, with a child in the center. Above them, angels float near a bright sunburst, and the background includes buildings and a tower. Notice the detailed textures: the rough bricks, the folds in the robes, and the tiny faces in the crowd. Dürer’s lines create depth and drama, even though it’s all in black and white. Next, look up chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and shadow to tell stories.
