About this work

This black-and-white print shows five men in a dim room. One man kneels, his head bowed, while another stands over him, pointing a finger. The others watch, some holding staffs. The walls are plain, and a window with shutters lets in little light. The scene looks tense, like an argument or trial. The artist used sharp lines to show the men’s clothes and faces, making everything look carved out of wood. Try looking up woodcut to see how this printmaking technique works.
