Autoportret Theodor Aman/Peisaj citadin (verso) is a 1850 by Theodor Aman, held at Bucharest Municipality Museum.
This painting shows two sides of the same artwork. On one side, a person with a beard sits in a dim room, their face half-lit by a small light source. The chair and table are dark wood, and the walls look worn. The other side shows an arched doorway with a cracked window, letting in a bit of green outside light. The brushstrokes are thick and rough, almost like the paint was scraped on. This makes the scene feel real but unfinished, like a quick sketch left behind. If you like this style, look up impasto.
Theodor Aman (20 March 1831 – 19 August 1891) was a Romanian painter, engraver and art professor. He mostly produced genre and history scenes.
