About this work

You see Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child stopping to rest in a scene filled with foliage. The artist used a lot of moving leaves and branches to show nature all around them. This was a new way of drawing at the time, using etching to make prints look like spontaneous drawings. Check out the technique of chiaroscuro to learn more about how artists use contrast to create depth.
