About this work

This engraving shows two shepherds resting in a hilly landscape. One leans on a staff, while the other sits with a sheep nearby. Trees, rocks, and a distant village with a tall church tower fill the background. The artist used fine lines and shading to create depth, especially in the folds of the shepherds’ clothes and the textures of the trees. This was a common way to build shadows in engravings. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists like this one layered lines to make shadows.
