Ale Porte del Dolo is a 1740 ink by Canaletto, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a busy canal lined with boats and people. On the left, a tall building looms over the water, while on the right, a bridge arches across. Trees and smaller houses frame the edges, and a church with a tall spire stands in the background. The water is dotted with gondolas and other small vessels, some carrying passengers. Notice how the artist used fine lines to show light bouncing off the water and buildings. This was a trick to make the scene look almost real. Try looking up etching to see how artists like Canaletto created such sharp details.
