Guardian Angel is a 1644 ink by Simone Cantarini, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows an angel with wings standing on a rocky hillside. The angel is holding a child’s hand, and both look upward toward clouds. The lines are soft but detailed, with the angel’s drapery and the landscape drawn carefully. The angel’s pose is calm, almost like a protector. This kind of scene was common in Baroque art, where religious and mythological themes were often shown with strong emotion and movement. Check out the technique: etching to see how artists like Cantarini made prints like this.
Simone Cantarini or Simone da Pesaro, called il Pesarese (Baptized on 21 August 1612 – 15 October 1648) was an Italian painter and etcher.
