By 1954, it passed to Thayer’s daughter, Julie Thayer Iselin Vehr, and remained in her possession until its gift to the National Gallery of Art in 2015.
The painting’s descent within the family was confirmed by Vehr, ensuring its continuous private ownership prior to its eventual donation.
