About this work

John Constable made a print of the Orwell river near Ipswich in 1855. The work is a mezzotint, a kind of print that uses dark and light tones to show depth. This print comes from one of the biggest series of mezzotints ever published. Constable picked his own oil sketches and paintings to turn into prints. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum next.

The story of this work

Overview

This mezzotint by John Constable, published posthumously, is part of *Various Subjects of English Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery*, a series of 22 prints engraved by David Lucas between 1830 and 1832. Created late in Constable’s career, the work translates his oil sketches and paintings into mezzotint, emphasizing chiaroscuro and the interplay of light and shadow in the English landscape. The print appears in a later volume with a red binding, containing 40 plates accompanied by descriptive text.
