Am see (On a Lake) is a 1917 ink by Lovis Corinth, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman sitting by a lake, her back turned. Behind her, a bridge stretches across the water, and trees line the shore. The lines are loose and quick, almost like scribbles, but they still show her shape and the landscape. The paper has a textured look, like old paper with a slight grain. The artist used a drypoint tool to scratch into the surface, creating dark lines that pop against the light background. Next, check out drypoint to see how this technique works.
Lovis Corinth was a German artist and writer whose mature work as a painter and printmaker realized a synthesis of impressionism and expressionism.
