Christ on the Mount of Olives is a 1509 ink by Lucas Cranach the Elder, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows Jesus praying alone in a stormy night. His hands are clasped, head bowed, surrounded by rough trees and swirling clouds. Small figures crouch in the background, watching from a distance. The artist used sharp lines to show Jesus’ tension and the wild landscape. This style was common in early prints. Next, look up the technique: woodcut to see how artists carved images into wood blocks.
Lucas Cranach the Elder was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker in woodcut and engraving.
