Le Jeune Estancelin est obligé de rentrer en classe! is a 1849 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows a boy in a cap and coat, his face pressed against a glass door. His body leans away but his eyes stay glued inside. The schoolroom behind him is bright with big windows and orderly rows. Daumier loved to poke at authority. Here, he picks on school rules with just a few lines. The boy’s longing says more than words ever could. Want to see more like this? Look up Daumier, Honoré.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
