Portrait of a Man

Executed in true fresco, the image was painted onto wet plaster, allowing pigments to become integral to the wall surface. Ghirlandaio employs a limited palette of dark garments, black shirt and beret, against the warm earth tone of the background, emphasizing the sitter’s facial features through careful modeling and delicate chiaroscuro.

Created in the late 15th century, the portrait entered the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts in the 20th century, where it has remained accessible to the public. Its provenance prior to acquisition is not extensively documented, reflecting the common anonymity of many Renaissance portrait commissions.

Ghirlandaio, a leading Florentine artist of the third Renaissance generation, operated a prolific workshop that trained numerous apprentices. Working contemporaneously with figures such as Verrocchio and Botticelli, he produced both large narrative cycles and intimate portraits like this, illustrating the breadth of his artistic output.
