About this work

Subject & Meaning

The image serves to document her likeness and status within the prominent Tornabuoni and Medici circles of Florence.

The work is a portrait depicting Lucrezia Tornabuoni as its sole main subject. Created in 1475 by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the painting functions as a representation of the specific historical figure rather than an allegorical or religious icon. Historical inventories from the late fifteenth century corroborate the existence of panel portraits of Tornabuoni, describing them as a 'stamp' or a 'head and bust,' which aligns with the visual focus of this piece.

The image serves to document her likeness and status within the prominent Tornabuoni and Medici circles of Florence. No complex symbolic attributes or secondary iconographic elements are detailed in the available records; the work's meaning is derived primarily from its identity as a direct likeness of the noblewoman, intended to preserve her memory and assert her familial prestige.

Technique & Style

The portrait of Lucrezia Tornabuoni was executed in the mid‑15th century using a combination of tempera and oil pigments on a poplar wood panel, a technique typical of Ghirlandaio’s workshop and of early Italian Renaissance painting. The support is a solid wooden panel, prepared for fine detail and durability, and the composition follows the conventions of a half‑length portrait, emphasizing a three‑quarter view of the sitter with a direct gaze. The rendering displays careful modeling of facial features, subtle chiaroscuro, and a richly patterned clothing scheme, reflecting the naturalistic realism characteristic of the period. The work is catalogued as a portrait in the National Gallery of Art’s collection.

History & Provenance

Attributed to Domenico Ghirlandaio and dated to 1475, this tempera and oil portrait on poplar panel likely originated in the Palazzo Tornabuoni in Florence, remaining there until approximately 1850. The work subsequently entered the collection of William Graham in London. Following Graham's death, it was retained by his estate executors after an 1886 Christie's auction where it was described merely as a 'Portrait of a Lady.'

Ownership passed to Kenneth Muir-MacKenzie, 1st Baron Muir-Mackenzie, and later to his daughter, Dorothea Muir-Mackenzie Hambourg. In 1937, the dealer Frank T. Sabin facilitated its sale to Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi in Florence. The Count sold the panel to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in July 1950, which subsequently gifted it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1952.
