Shepherd with Lamb is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a quiet countryside scene. In the foreground, a shepherd leans on a staff, watching over a few sheep. Behind him, a rocky hillside rises, dotted with small bushes and trees. The sky is just a faint line at the top, leaving most of the focus on the earthy tones and textures below. The artist used fine lines to create depth, making the sheep and shepherd feel close while the distant trees fade softly. This style was common in etchings, where ink is pressed into a metal plate to make prints. Next, check out etching to see how this technique works.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
