Two Casks in Front of a Cottage is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a simple scene of a small wooden cottage with a steep roof. Two barrels sit near the door, and a few trees—one large and leafy—frame the house. The ground is covered in grass and bushes, and the whole scene is drawn in black lines on a light background. The artist used a technique that lets ink sit in carved lines, creating sharp details. This style was popular in the 1600s for making prints. Look up etching to see how artists like this made their marks.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
