Bullfights: The Daring of Martincho in the Ring at Saragossa is a 1816 by Francisco Goya, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows a charging bull lunging toward a seated man who holds a cape. Behind them, a shadowy arena wall has a small crowd watching from above. The bull’s muscles are thick and tense, while the man stays calm, leaning back on a chair. The scene looks like a dangerous moment in a bullfight, but the artist used strong contrasts between light and dark to focus on the action. This style is called chiaroscuro. Look up chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and shadow to create drama.
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (; Spanish: ; 30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker.
