Created during Francisco Goya's voluntary exile in Bordeaux, The Milkmaid of Bordeaux is generally dated to 1827, the year before the artist's death, though some sources place its creation between 1825 and 1827. After Goya's death in 1828 the work passed, by way of his son Javier and his companion Leocadia Zorrilla, into the hands of Juan Bautista de Muguiro, a relative of the artist, to whom the financially pressed Zorrilla sold it in 1830. It remained with the Muguiro family for over a century until his descendants donated it to the Museo del Prado in Madrid in 1946, where it has remained. The painting was shown in "Goya's Last Works" at The Frick Collection in 2006.
