Vignette for Title Page of Balthasar Cordier, Catena Patrum Graecorum in Sanctum Ioannem is a 1630 ink by Cornelis Galle I, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a detailed black-and-white engraving of a fancy coat of arms. At the center is a shield with a cross and some letters. Above the shield, two helmets with feathers sit on either side. Below, a banner unfurls with more letters, and the whole thing is framed by swirls, grapes, and leaves. The artist used fine lines and shading to make the shapes pop off the page. This kind of careful detail was common in book illustrations back then. Look up engraving to see how artists like this created such sharp prints.
Cornelis Galle the Elder (1576 – 29 March 1650), a younger son of Philip Galle, was born at Antwerp in 1576, and was taught engraving by his father.
