This sketch shows a woman kneeling on a pillow, her back to us. She’s holding a small bundle in her arms, and her head is turned slightly to the side. The lines are loose and dark, focusing on the shape of her body and the folds of her clothing. The artist’s quick strokes suggest they were working fast, maybe practicing how light and shadow fall on the body. The sketch feels more like a practice drawing than a finished piece. Check out George Bellows (American, 1882–1925) to see how he used sketches like this in his work.
