This drawing shows a quiet scene at Macao Bay in 1830. George Chinnery sketched the western end of the Praya Grande, with Fort Bomparto by the water and a wall climbing Penha Hill. In the foreground, Chinese figures rest under a rattan shelter. It’s a snapshot of daily life in early 19th-century Macao, with real places drawn in detail. Next time you’re in London, look for this work at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
