Saint Valentine is a 1475 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This picture shows three figures standing on a grassy field. The person on the left holds a tall staff with a golden circle on top. The other two stand close together, with one holding a cross and the other a lamb. The background has strange symbols and text in a blocky, old-style font. Notice the flat, sharp lines and the bright, flat colors—this isn’t a realistic drawing. The artist used simple shapes and bold outlines to tell the story. Next, look up woodcut to see how this printing method worked.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
