About this work
Overview
Giorgio Vasari’s oil painting *Jacob’s Dream* (1557) presents a biblical episode in which Jacob envisions a ladder extending from earth to heaven. Executed during the Mannerist phase of the Italian Renaissance, the work measures the artist’s engagement with religious narrative through a composed, tranquil tableau.
Subject & Meaning
The composition shows Jacob reclined on the ground, his head supported by his right hand, while a radiant staircase of golden steps rises toward the heavens. Angels ascend the ladder, and at its summit a bearded elder seated on a cloud is flanked by two cherubs, suggesting divine presence and the promise of covenant.
Technique & Style
Vasari employs a muted palette of reds and tans for Jacob’s garments, contrasting with the luminous gold of the ladder and the cool blues of the sky. The arrangement of figures and the elongated perspective reflect Mannerist conventions, creating a sense of depth that guides the eye upward.
History & Provenance
Painted in 1557, the work entered the collection of the Walters Art Museum, where it remains on display. Its provenance traces back to the artist’s workshop in Florence before being acquired by the museum in the early twentieth century.
