On the Seine is a 1895 oil by Homer Dodge Martin, a American Impressionism work, held at Art Institute of Chicago.
This painting shows a wide river bend under a bright blue sky. Trees frame the view in soft greens and browns. A small boat drifts near the shore, catching the light. Martin painted this late in life, when his eyesight was failing. He used thick paint to build up the sky, making it feel heavy and real. You can almost feel the quiet of the day. Look for the ripples in the water. They’re painted with quick, loose brushstrokes. Find this in the Art Institute of Chicago.
