The work titled 'Madonna and Child in a Landscape' is a 15th‑century Italian oil painting on panel, dated 1490. It originated in the collection of Otto Wesendonck and remained in his family until the 1935 Wesendonck sale, after which it passed through Duveen Brothers and was purchased by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in March 1937. The painting was lent to the Provinzialmuseum in Bonn from 1909 to 1935 and listed as work number 6 in the museum catalogue.
In 1939 it was gifted to the National Gallery of Art, where it is part of the Kress Collection. The composition shows the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child in a religious setting, a subject recorded in the work’s genre description.
The painting has been held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., since 1939, when it was received as a gift from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, New York, and is catalogued within the Samuel H. Kress Collection. It is also associated with the LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn. The work was originally owned by Otto Wesendonk (1815–1896) in Berlin, passing to his heirs, who lent it in 1909 to the city of Bonn, where it was displayed at the Provinzialmuseum under catalogue number 6 until 1935.
It was subsequently sold at the Wesendonk sale held by Lempertz in Cologne on 27 November 1935 (lot 4), then handled by Duveen Brothers, Inc., in London and New York. The Duveen Brothers' letter of 9 March 1937 confirmed its sale to the Kress Foundation, with provenance recorded as the Wesendonk Collection.
