Saint Catherine of Siena, or Saint Clare of Assisi is a 1465 ink by Italian 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a single figure holding a small book or object in their hands. The person has a halo behind their head and wears a long robe with a patterned inner layer. Their face looks calm, with simple lines for features and a slight smile. The colors are basic—gray for the robe, yellow for the halo, and red for the inner garment. The border is a thick yellow line. This style was common in religious art from that time. Look up woodcut to see how this print was made.
This anonymous Italian engraver from the 1490s carved images that could be peeled apart like paper dolls—each knot in the "First Knot" print was cut from a single sheet so you could lift the loops right off the page.
