Arch of Constantine

About this work

This drawing shows a grand stone archway with two tall columns. Above the arch, there are small scenes carved into panels—people on horses, soldiers, and figures holding objects. The top has Latin writing in big letters. The floor looks like black-and-white tiles, and the whole thing looks like an old Roman-style building. The artist copied a real arch from history, but made it into this detailed print. The lines are all made by scratching into metal—a method called *engraving*. Next, check out how engraving works by looking at the technique.
