The Beggars: Frontispiece: Captain of the Barons is a 1623 by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a scruffy man in tattered clothes, slouching forward with a long staff. He’s carrying a heavy sack over one shoulder, and a banner behind him reads *"Capitano de Baron."* In the background, a few small figures mill about near tents and a church steeple. The artist exaggerated his wrinkles and ragged clothes to make him look tough but worn out. This was a common way to show people in power who were also rough around the edges. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how artists used light and shadow this way.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
