Brueghel employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, using strong contrasts of light and shadow to model forms and create a sense of depth. The illuminated figures and the tower emerge from a darker background, giving the composition a three‑dimensional quality. Fine detailing of architecture, water, and distant birds reflects the artist’s meticulous observation typical of Flemish Baroque realism.

The painting entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, one of Germany’s oldest public museums, where it remains on display. Its provenance prior to acquisition is not extensively documented, but it reflects the artist’s productive period in the late 1590s, shortly before his collaborations with Peter Paul Rubens that helped shape early 17th‑century Flemish art.

Jan Brueghel the Elder, son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and brother of Pieter Brueghel the Younger, worked within a family tradition that blended genre scenes with religious subjects. The late 16th century saw a surge in devotional imagery in the Low Countries, driven by the Counter‑Reformation; Brueghel’s work exemplifies this trend while also anticipating the more elaborate compositions of his later collaborations with Rubens.
