An Ancient Picture of the Eight Part Bridge in Mikawa Province (from the series Curious Views of Famous Bridges in the Provinces) is a 1834 by Katsushika Hokusai, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This painting shows a long, wooden bridge with people walking across it. The bridge has railings on both sides, and the ground below looks wet and muddy. In the background, there’s a mountain with sparse trees, and the sky is light blue with a few dark clouds. A few trees with bare branches stand near the bridge, and some people are carrying round objects on poles. Notice how the artist used flat colors and simple shapes to show depth. The bridge looks like it’s bending slightly, which makes the scene feel a little off-balance. If you like this style, check out the artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Katsushika Hokusai spent his life in Edo, now Tokyo, where he drew and carved prints for a living.
