難波屋おきた|Okita of the Naniwa-ya Tea-house is a 1794 ink by Kitagawa Utamaro, a Romanticism work, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A woman in a black-and-white patterned robe and red sash stands holding a black tray with a small bowl on it. Her outfit has gold embroidery, and she wears a tall black hat with a red bow. The background is plain, but there’s a vertical strip of writing on the left side. This print was made using woodblock printing, a technique where artists carve images onto wood and then stamp them. The bold lines and flat colors help tell the story simply. Next, check out Kitagawa Utamaro to see more of his work.
