Landscape (Paysage) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a lone tree with twisted branches in the foreground. Behind it, a rocky hill rises, dotted with a few small buildings. The lines are scratchy and uneven, like the artist rushed—or maybe they wanted it that way. The rough edges and dark marks come from etching and drypoint, where the artist carves into metal plates. This style lets them create deep shadows and textures, especially in the trees and rocks. Check out technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how these methods work.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
