Paris under Snow, View from St.-Gervais (Paris sous la neige, vu du haut de St.-Gervaais) is a 1890 ink by Auguste Lepère, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a snowy Paris from a high vantage point. The city is covered in white, with rooftops and streets dusted with snow. A river cuts through the middle, and bridges connect both sides. In the distance, a dome and spires rise above the buildings. The artist used fine lines to build up shadows and textures, like snow on trees and rooftops. This method is called cross-hatching. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists create depth with just lines.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
