The composition depicts an unidentified male sitter, rendered with a direct gaze and restrained attire. While the identity remains unknown, the portrait conveys the conventions of status and individuality typical of Renaissance private commissions, emphasizing the sitter’s social presence through subtle facial expression and compositional balance.

Executed in oil on panel, the painting showcases Lotto’s handling of light and texture, with delicate modeling of the face and a nuanced palette of earth tones. The brushwork combines a smooth finish in the flesh tones with more expressive strokes in the background, reflecting the transitional aesthetics between Venetian colorism and Central Italian draftsmanship.

The canvas entered the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de’ Medici after he acquired it from the Cornaro family. An inventory from 1675 listed the work as a Raphael, a misattribution that persisted until scholarly reassessment in 1910 correctly assigned it to Lotto. The painting has remained in the Medici holdings before its transfer to the Uffizi.

Created during a period when Lotto was active in the Veneto region, the portrait aligns with contemporary trends of individualized representation among the Italian elite. Its early date places it alongside works by contemporaries such as Titian and Giorgione, illustrating the diffusion of portrait conventions across northern Italy.
