Young Woman Seated on a Bed is a 1766 by Louis-Marin Bonnet, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
The painting shows a young woman sitting on a bed. She's dressed in simple clothes and looks relaxed. The artist made two versions of this print, and they're a bit different - the earlier one is more revealing, while the later one is more modest, with the bed sheet covering her thigh. The woman in the painting seems calm and peaceful. The way the artist drew her is interesting, with simple lines and gentle curves. The print also uses a special technique to create contrast between light and dark areas. You can learn more about this technique, called chiaroscuro.
This print emulates a traditional chiaroscuro drawing: dark outlines and shadows with white highlights on specially toned paper. In this later edition of the print, Bonnet modified the bed sheet so it discreetly lies across the woman’s thigh. The earlier version on display nearby, printed in red ink, is less modest.
