Ancienne porte du Palais de Justice, Paris (Old Gate of the Palace of Justice, Paris) is a 1854 ink by Charles Meryon, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a tall, narrow gate made of stone blocks. The gate has pointed arches and a small window near the top. Behind it, you can see a row of buildings with steep roofs, drawn in fine, crisscrossed lines. The artist used a sharp tool to scratch into the metal plate, creating dark, textured lines that make the stone look rough. This method is called drypoint. Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868) was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he had colour blindness.
